Founded in 1822, Liberty was originally called “Chouteau” after Auguste Chouteau, who helped found St. Louis in 1764 and had many business interests in the area. The name changed five years later when settlers decided they wanted something that better represented their ideals of freedom and independence—hence the name “Liberty”. The city quickly grew as steamboats began traveling up and down the Missouri River, making it easier for people to travel to and from the area for trade purposes. It became known as a trading post for farmers living in western Missouri and eastern Kansas during this time period, leading to more economic opportunities for those living in Liberty.
