About Us
Leavenworth is a city with a rich history dating back to its days as a frontier fort. Fort Leavenworth was established in 1827, making it one of the oldest continuously occupied military posts west of the Mississippi River. The fort played an important role in the development of the American West, and it was here that many famous figures such as Kit Carson and Buffalo Bill Cody got their start.
Today, Fort Leavenworth is still an active military installation, and it continues to play an important role in the defense of our country. The United States Disciplinary Barracks, which is the only maximum-security prison for military personnel in the country, is also located here. In total, there are more than 5,000 soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines, and civilians who work at Fort Leavenworth on a daily basis.
Lansing is a relatively new city; it was incorporated in 1957 after several smaller communities merged together. The city’s proximity to Fort Leavenworth has always been one of its defining characteristics. In fact, many of Lansing’s early residents were employed by the fort in some capacity.
